Until 1977 Cardiff’s official meteorological station was at Penylan and only a simple weather station existed within the nursery at Bute Park. In 1976 it was decided that Bute Park would be a better location for Cardiff’s main station.
Meteorological information from Bute Park has been returned to the Met Office since September 1977. Originally data was entered on pre-printed forms and returned by post about once a week.
The meteorological station is within the nursery area and is not accessible to the public. The present-day station is part of the Met Office network of more than 270 automatic weather stations which report a mixture of snapshot hourly observations of the weather (synoptic observations) as well as daily summaries of the weather (climate observations).
