Brodies on the Wall

Brodies is a family-run, independent coffee company rooted in the parks of Cardiff; serving great coffee and simple good food from welcoming spaces that feel like part of the rhythm of your everyday.

As the third and final instalment of the Brodies Coffee Co. journey, The Wall at West Lodge was always going to be something special. After a period of refurbishment we opened the doors to the public in July 2025.

It’s been a whirlwind, but with each passing month we feel more at home.

Thanks to its central location, The Wall is a go-to coffee stop for a freshly brewed flat white or a made-to-order breakfast bap on the way to work or class. Got time to sit a while? Then settle in and watch the world go by – you can choose from our downstairs seating with the buzz of the bar, a calm upstairs space overlooking Bute Park or our plentiful outdoor seating – perfect for sunny days in the city.

Great coffee – Good food – Familiar faces – Everyday.

Everything is available eat in or takeaway – perfect for those picnics in Bute Park.

Why call it “Brodies on the Wall”?

One of Cardiff’s most loved quirks is the Animal Wall that runs along Castle Street between Cardiff Castle and West Lodge. Featuring 15 unique animal sculptures, each with it’s own personality, it’s a must-see for visitors and locals alike. To honour this iconic landmark, we commissioned a bespoke mural by local Cardiff artist Matt Joyce, celebrating the unlikely collaboration between Architect William Burges and Brodies Coffee Co.

If you are interested in the history of the area we have an information board situated upstairs detailing several of The Wall’s historic features:

  • The West Lodge Building
  • The Decorative Victorian Floor Tiles
  • The Footings
  • The Animal Wall

However and whenever you visit, you’ll always receive a warm welcome from us at Brodies.

Opening times

History of the West Lodge building

The grand West Lodge entrance to the estate was constructed sometime after 1860 and was originally used to accommodate castle employees. After the park was gifted to the people of Cardiff in 1947 it was used for park and castle employees and as a mess room for the park rangers.

Following the restoration of the listed building, Pettigrew Tea Rooms was opened in 2012, before becoming Brodies on the Wall in 2025.

The beautiful reclaimed Victorian tiles from the site of the historic Blackfriars Friary are laid on the floor of the coffee shop.
