We want to thank everyone for their overwhelming s We want to thank everyone for their overwhelming support following the terrible recent acts of vandalism committed in Bute Park.   We know a lot of you share our sadness and frustration at this senseless act of vandalism and you’re asking how you can help, we thank you for that.   Please bear with us while we try to repair what we can and work to assess the full extent of this crime. Sadly, we’re discovering more damage every day including arson and damage to infrastructure and buildings as well as the trees, plants, planters, manhole covers and bins that have been destroyed.   Our team is really busy working hard to make safe and repair the damage done while working with the police. Please be assured we will support everyone affected by this crime.   We urge anyone with any information to contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 to help deal with this senseless act of vandalism.   Bute Park is still the fabulous park you know & love so please continue to enjoy it.   Watch this space, we'll shortly bring news on how you can help us with our recovery & plans to restore the damaged arboretum collection. For the past few weeks, our Ranger and her conserv For the past few weeks, our Ranger and her conservation volunteers have been working hard to eradicate the Himalayan balsam in the park through a technique commonly nicknamed as “Balsam Bashing”! Himalayan balsam is a non-native, invasive plant species which outcompetes our native ground flora. It has spread throughout the park over the past year as the pandemic prevented us from carrying out the work. The plants are pulled up by their roots and discarded into piles, where they breakdown and feed nutrients back into the soil. Rachel says that the volunteers have done an amazing job and is very pleased with the progress made. “This will mean that there should be less balsam to remove next year and then hopefully, after a couple more years of management, there will be a big reduction in Himalayan balsam growth in the park, which will allow our native ground flora to thrive.” Now that the Balsam Bashing is over for this year, volunteer sessions will be focusing on other aspects of park management and conservation. Rachel’s next session will be Tuesday 14th Sep. We also have a session every second Saturday of the month.
