Cardiff Council have granted permission for a new community orchard planting in Bute Park. The project is being developed and led by a community group with support from the Friends of Bute Park.
There are two orchard locations: a main one to the north of Blackweir playing fields, and a smaller one adjacent to the historic ‘Orchard Lawn.’
The smaller site is an opportunity to introduce park visitors to the benefits of orchards and signpost them to the larger site. Trees here were planted on 30th November 2022.
The various trees selected include:
- Apple Malus domestica ‘Ribston Pippin’
- Pear ‘Pitmaston Duchess’
- Green Gage ‘Old Green Gage’
- Apple ‘Beauty of Boskoop’
- Cherry ‘Morello’
- Plum Victoria
- Pear Beurre Hardy
- Cherry Rivers Early
Trees at the main orchard site were planted on 26th February 2024 and 1st March 2025.

- Cherry Prunus avium var. Bottler
- Cherry Prunus cerasus var. Morello
- Cherry Prunus avium var. Large Black
- Plum Prunus domestica var. Pershore Yellow Egg
- Greengage Prunus domestica ssp. italica var. Old Green Gage
