What an exciting Monday in Year 2! We were so lucky to have a beekeeper visit us today with lots of exciting equipment and information! We cannot wait to continue our learning about honey bees and also learn the waggle dance! 🐝🤩Diolch @buteparkcardiff for the fantastic visit😀

A few weeks ago, after hearing of the vandalism in A few weeks ago, after hearing of the vandalism incident in our park, conservationist and beloved Welsh nature TV presenter, Iolo Williams, very kindly made this video for us. We are so grateful for his and your support. Our team have done an excellent job in repairing the damage done and working with the police to make the park safe. We urge anyone who witnessed or heard anything in or around Bute Park on the night of Thursday 9th September to contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, to help us find whoever committed this senseless act of vandalism. Bute Park is still the fabulous park you know & love, so please continue to enjoy it! Also, watch this space as we'll shortly bring news on how you can help us with our recovery. TREET OF THE WEEK is back! 🌳🌲 This week, I' TREET OF THE WEEK is back! 🌳🌲 This week, I've chosen this wonderful tree: Crataegus x lavalleei (Lavallée's Hawthorn, also known as Hybrid cockspur thorn). This tree is a hybrid cross between Crataegus mexicana and Crataegus colodendron, originating back in the 1870s. It is a small but versatile tree, which this particular specimen is demonstrating well, because although it is dying, it is still trying to hang on and produce fruit for the next generation. There are many reasons why it could be declining (including disease and/or old age) but it is still very ecologically important, as standing deadwood - which is valuable habitat for insects, birds and bats 🐜🐦🦇 It has white flowers that appear in May 💮 and are followed by orange fruits, known as Haws, that provide a fine contrast when the foliage turns in Autumn. You can find this tree in our Bat Meadow, behind the Plant Nursery!
