These stones mark the eastern end of the 18th Century Bridge across the Taff replaced with the current bridge in 1920’s.
The stonework of the 18th century bridge abutment is still preserved within the flood prevention bank on the east bank of the Taff beside the existing Canton Bridge. An early view of the demolished abutment is seen in an 1891 sketch in Cassell’s ‘Historic Houses of the United Kingdom.
The intact bridge appears in a number of important views of Cardiff from the west, and most notably, was painted by J. W. Turner in 1796.
