About Bute Park 5

Trivia

When did Bute Park open to the public?

You are correct.
Well done!

Hmmm... that's not right.

Did you know?

The Bute family brought power and prosperity to Cardiff (1776-1947 AD), which they turned from a sleepy backwater into one of the greatest coal exporting ports in the world.

Andrew Pettigrew was Head Gardener to the third Marquis of Bute between 1873 and 1901. Pettigrew planted rare shrubs and trees from all over the world which are part of our famed arboretum and specialist tree collection today.

In 1947 the Fifth Marquess of Bute gifted the Castle and grounds to the people of Cardiff and the land was turned into a public park which was opened on April 15th 1949.

Bute Park has hosted a number of events over the years of it opening- including outdoor cinema, races, rock and pop concerts, eisteddfod and a spectacular Christmas light trail.

Look behind you, in 2018, to celebrate 70 years of Bute Park being opened to the public was installed a sculpture. There are 2 hands holding posts featuring 19 different leaves (the Gingko is featured twice).
