The ‘Myths and Legends of Wales’…in a Wheelbarrow

The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Cardiff and the City of Cardiff Council are calling on budding gardeners in schools, nurseries and after-school clubs to celebrate the ‘Myths and Legends of Wales’ in this year’s RHS Cardiff Schools Wheelbarrow competition.

With tales of Excalibur wielding King Arthur, the heartbroken St Dwynwen, the tragic killing of Gelert and thousands of years of history and mythology to draw on, the theme hopes to encourage entries from across Cardiff, Caerphilly and the Vale of Glamorgan.

Cabinet Member for Environment, Cllr Bob Derbyshire, said: “Wales is a land rich with legends and I’m looking forward to seeing how our talented young people interpret them in the annual Schools Wheelbarrow competition. It’s a great way to introduce children to the world of gardening and spur their interest in the natural world.”

RHS Cardiff Show Manager, Rose Gore Browne said: “We are so excited to be working with all the local schools and their budding gardeners once again. The theme of Myths and Legends will certainly produce some imaginative wheelbarrows and it will be great to see historic Welsh tales come to life.”

Winning entries will receive £100, £75 or £50 of National Garden Gift vouchers.

The closing date for entries is Friday 3rd February.

Only 60 entries will be accepted this year so early application is advised.
