It is that time of the year again where applications for the annual RHS Cardiff Schools Wheelbarrow competition officially open. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Cardiff and Cardiff Council are calling on schools and groups in Cardiff, Caerphilly and the Vale of Glamorgan to enter this year’s Wheelbarrow competition.

The event, held in Bute Park, has become an engaging and active tradition over the last few years.  In 2017 there were 57 entries in the race to become Cardiff’s favourite wheelbarrow. Over three days, more than 10,000 visitors voted for their favourite, which highlights the event’s popularity among show visitors.

Past themes have included Myths and Legends of Wales (2017), The Wonderful World of Roald Dahl (2016) and Floral Fairytales (2014). Now, RHS Cardiff has announced this year’s theme: The Sea

Wheelbarrows can thus be designed along the theme of: The Sea

  1. Under the Sea
  2. Holiday by the Sea
  3. Tales of the Sea
  4. Buildings by the Sea
  5. Journey to the Sea

Visitors to RHS Cardiff, which takes place in Bute Park from 13th – 15th April 2018, will vote for their favourite creation and the top three entries will win £100, £75 or £50 National Garden Gift vouchers.

The closing date for entries is Friday the 3rd of February.  Since only 60 entries will be accepted this year, applications should be made as soon as possible.
