Tree Charter Celebration Event

November 25 @ 10:45 am - 2:30 pm

| Free

Bute Park offers an extensive area of mature parkland within Cardiff’s city centre boasting a nationally-significant tree collection, numerous natural play features for the young (or young-at-heart), an education centre, three cafes, and a wealth of horticulture and wildlife interest.

Bute Park has been selected as one of 10 UK sites to host a large carved wooden totem pole to signify one of the Principles of the Tree Charter. It is the only Principle Pole in Wales. The pole will be created from Grown in Britain oak from the Crown Estate, carved by artist Simon Clements at the Sylva Wood Centrein Abingdon. Words inscribed on the pole were written by Sophie McKeand Young People’s Laureate Wales.

The pole is 15ft high and will be installed in a prominent location near the Park’s busiest West Gate entrance. It will include an information plaque and a seat plinth.

The Bute Park pole signifies the principle recognising the importance trees have to national art and heritage.

The celebration event taking place 11am – 2pm will include two tree walks, one aimed at families with children, and one aimed at adults. There will also be acoustic performance by traditional Welsh folk musicians, complementary hot food and drinks, and a reading of a poem commissioned specially for the event by Sophie McKeand Young People’s Laureate Wales.

Sophie McKeand is using stories, memories and experiences of people she meets in Bute Park to provide the inspiration for a poem that seeks to unlock the wisdom of trees and channel “The stories they would tell”.

Tickets must be booked in advance but are free of charge.
